PLEASE EXPLAIN STEP BY STEP, THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ANSWERS

According to an article by the Associated Press, there is renewed hope that the North Atlantic “right” whale is moving away from distinction. (These are refered to as “right” whales because in the 19th century they were thought to be the “right” kind of whales to hunt.) When monitoring the only known winter calving area of these whales, 17 female whales showed up that were not previously known to have existed. Prior to this finding, it was thought that the North Atlantic whale population was approximately 300 whales. These 17 surprising newcomers increase the previously-thought population by what percent? Express your answer to the nearest whole percent.
One reason these 17 new whales are so surprising is that it’s hard to believe such massive creatures could go undetected! These whales can be 45 feet long and weigh 40 tons. According to these measurements, what is the average weight, in pounds, per linear foot for these whales? Express your answer to the nearest whole number.

Best answer:

Answer by BobWang
If there were only 100 known before, finding 17 new ones would increase population by 17%.
Since there were 300 before, increase is 1/3 as much = 17/3 = 6%

(2,000 pounds / ton) * (40 tons) / (45 feet) = 1,778 pounds / foot

You really have to cut through a lot of garbage to figure out what it is they’re asking. Basically, it’s this:

17 is what percent increase over 300?
40 tons divided by 45 feet = how many pounds per foot?

17 / 300 = .0566 or about 6%
(40 x 2000) / 45 = 1778

Best to you.

Question by : Please help me on this part of my Story/Novel, what needs to be fixed and is it any good -small section-?
This is not the beginning, nor the end. Somewhere in the middle. Is it good enough?

“My heart pounded quite hard in my chest as I gazed at the entrance. Violent screams and images spun rapidly in my head. For some reason, I was always nervous or simply overly excited before the hunt.

I stepped out the door and walked down the path to my garage. It was pitch black in the garage. As usual, it had a musky dusty stench that hung heavily in the air. I knew that basically everything except my car and the tarp covering my motorbike had a thick layer of dust over it.

I owned a simple silver four door Honda and a sport motorbike. As I am simply hunting tonight to study my victim, I will be using my motorbike.

It was hard to see it, so I stuck my hands out and blindly searched for it. I will love the day when I will be more organized I thought to myself as I felt one of my motorbike’s mirrors.

My hands maneuvered over to one of the handles of my motorbike and grabbed hold of it. With that, I mounted the motorbike and played with my keys to find the remote. At finding it, I jabbed my finger into one of the buttons to open the garage door and watched it as it slid open. I kicked the kick stand up and waddle out of the garage on the tips of my toes, moving the motorbike without the engine on.

Once near the side walk, I halted and just gazed at the road and sighed. I peeled the paintball mask off and placed it on the tank. My lips shuddered as the chilly air sunk deep into my skin cooling my core down. I could barely see the steam spiral into the air with each breath I exhaled.

Just seeing the steam, my cravings kicked in. Ugh, where are my cigarettes when I need them? **** I thought to myself as I patted my body down.

I found half a pack in one of my pockets of my sweater. “I swore I took them out of my sweater,” I mumbled as I pulled a cigarette out along with my lighter.

The cigarette dangled from my lips as I lit the lighter. My eyes analyzed the neighborhood for any witnesses as I waved the flame at the tip of the cigarette, lighting the tip up.

I inhaled a deep breath and released the carbon dioxide from my lungs out into the silent night. “I need to align the information…victims info,” I mouthed as I squeezed my eyes shut.

It was how it worked for me. I needed to lay it all out like a map on a table.”

Thanks.

Hunters should not hunt what?? Read please?

Question by mortician: Hunters should not hunt what?? Read please?
Hello. My comp 2 professor assigned a research paper that is due at the end of the semester. It is an argument. I presented her with “Hunters should not hunt for sport”. She says she wants me to be as specific as possible and rewrite it as “Hunter should not hunt [for a specific animal]“. I’ve been thinking and thinking and searching the web for what animal I could use but have had no luck. Anyone know of any animals that are not now illegal to hunt but is causing some problems and should be illegal?

Any ideas are welcome. I live in Florida if that helps but it doesn’t have to be a local thing.
Perhaps I should not have placed this in thr hunting category. Hmm, this might result in annoying answers. But I could be wrong…

ANY animals – we have plenty of meat in our grocery stores and clothing made from different materials so there is no excuse for hunting anything any more.

Advice on ‘Nampa’ (なんぱ) please?

Question by Johnny: Advice on ‘Nampa’ (なんぱ) please?
Hi, I would like to get some opinions on nampa, particularly from Japanese women.

I’ve been in Japan a few years and came here to study Japanese and teach English. I enjoy living in Japan but I feel meeting women is much more difficult than it needs to be because of the negative nampa stereotype.

I didn’t come here to be a “playboy” or for “girl hunting”. However, I am a young single man who would like to find a nice girlfriend. None of my friends or co-workers know any nice single girls right now, so I try to go out and meet women at different places. This is where the problem for me usually starts. Whenever I go somewhere and try talking to a woman I don’t know and have never met before, 9 times out of 10 I end up being ignored or brushed off. It could be anywhere, even a more social setting like a club or a bar.

I feel as if a Japanese woman doesn’t know a guy, she doesn’t want to talk to him because she thinks he’s just doing nampa. Most women never even give me a chance to show them that I’m not. They just ignore me from the beginning and never talk to me. I find this to be very rude on their part as well as frustrating for me. My Japanese friends have given me many reasons for this but to be honest they just sound like childish excuses. For example, some of my friends tell me it’s because Japanese girls are very shy. This doesn’t really make too much sense to me. If a girl is all alone and a guy is trying to talk to her, I can understand her being nervous or shy. However, if she’s in a public place surrounded by friends, I don’t see any reason to be shy. If anything, I’m the one who should be nervous! Walking up to a group of strangers and trying to start a conversation isn’t easy.

So here’s why I really wrote this.

In Japan, If you can’t meet someone through school, work, friends or family, then what are you supposed to do?

Grow old alone?

That’s what it feels like sometimes.

Thanks, I hope I didn’t offend anyone,
Thanks to everyone for your sincere answers. Here’s a little more information in response to your comments.

Tony,

“You teach English and you cannot get your students to introduce you to their friends? huh?”

Thanks but I teach children, junior high school students, I’m an ALT not an eikaiwa instructor.

Apple828,

“Maybe this would depend on the situation, but even if they’re not alone, wouldn’t you feel nervous or uncomfortable if a total stranger intruded into your group all of a sudden?”

Nope, as long as the person was polite about it, this has never bothered me. I’ve met many interesting people and good friends by giving strangers a chance.

If after talking to them, I don’t feel comfortable with the person or don’t like what they have to say, then I just won’t see them again.

Tokyo E,

“You are currently studying Japanese, but how much Japanese can you speak?”

I’ve been studying Japanese for about 5 years and my speaking ability is near level 2 of the JLPT.

Thanks!
Thanks again for the comments, you’ve given me some extra things to consider, thank you.

Someone asked
“Where are you located?”

I like in a small town in Yamanashi. It’s near Kofu if anyone knows the area. I used to live in Chiba.

Another person asked

“Have you considered dating non Japanese girls?”

Actually, the few girls I dated here have not been Japanese. I only briefly dated a Japanese girl once for a short time.

There are no bars, clubs or places to hang out in this town. Only a few izakayas and family restaurants. Meeting people has been a little more difficult in some ways but surprisingly easier in others.
Jcrew

“Any single teachers? I know many Japanese teachers tend to be on the younger side these days.”

Thanks but I’ve already tried this before, it never turned out well.

Answer by Tony
no offense taken :)

there are (and I am generalizing a lot) 4 categories of foreigners in Japan:
- English teachers
- US military
- Middle management/executives working for foreign companies
- Tourists

Some Japanese women will NOT date a foreigner no matter what
Some will talk to one ONLY if introduced properly (and they see the value of meeting one!)
Some will be ambivalent
and some will date ONLY foreigners

Here is how the various groups are viewed (Pros/Cons):
- English teachers: nice guys, like to party, fun to be with, make little to no money, tend to be on the marginal part of life, unsure about their future in Japan, may or may not be boyfriend material
- Military: young, drink a lot, love to fight, undetermined time in Japan, good ticket out of Japan
- Tourists: in for a quick wham-bam-thank-you-m’am, fun for a night or two will all expenses paid
- Middle management/executives: prosperous, successful, decent jobs – definitely a potential husband (unless already married of course but that has rarely stopped folks…) <-- this is the real target

You want to be more successful at chatting women up?
Figure out the type of Japanese girls that might be interested in YOU. Chatting women in clubs is no big deal - just make sure you go to the type of clubs that tend to have women interested in the type of person you are. You teach English and you cannot get your students to introduce you to their friends? huh?

Tom Clancy has dined with presidents and generals on many occasions and has private access to military weapons and vehicles. He is a techno-thriller writer who is honored by many military officials and presidents even though he said things like “What the government is good at is collecting taxes, taking away your freedoms and killing people. It’s not good at much else.”
Tom Clancy was born in Baltimore Maryland, April 1947, and was raised by his father, who was a credit employee. When he grew up he married 2 women but it didn’t “work out” but in his third marriage he married Wanda Thomas and they had three kids and are still married to this day. Tom Clancy also owns his own railroad car and tank and has his own video game business which is doing quite well. One of his quotes I agree with is that “Fighting wars is not so much about killing people as it is about finding things out. The more you know, the more likely you are to win a battle.”
Tom Clancy was always interested in joining the military when he was young but when he was old enough to join the military he was denied because of vision problems, so he decided to write books about the military. He mainly wrote about scenarios and became popular with his first book, “The Hunt for Red October.” He then went on to writing other books like, “Storm Rising” and, “Patriot Games.” after writing a few more books he stared documenting and making more stories about real things that happened in wars and he ended up with ten breakthrough works which all came first in New York Times best seller and three of those were made into movies. He has so far printed more than fifty million copies of his books. His books created a new genre of books, called techno-thriller which involved things like espionage, science fiction, and action.
Even though Tom Clancy didn’t make it into the military, it still brought him wealth and happiness. He is a man honored by many and is “the father” of the techno-thriller genre but overall I’d have to say his best works were “The Hunt for Red October”, and ” Rainbow Six” In fact he was such a realistic writer that he says “I’ve made up stuff that’s turned out to real, that’s the spooky part.”

some of it isnt indented for some reason after i copied and pasted it. itts only 1 and 2 6ths of a page even though it needs to be 2 pages max
And how long did you think this took?

It took 2 hrs
o and i am required to have 2 quotes
i only copied and pasted the quotes an im pretty sure im allowed to do that.anyway i am putting on citations anyway

90% of it is retelling information off of the internet. You even admitted you’re copying and pasting that’s bad. See what they want you to do in an essay is take a phrase out of it, then write 4-5 sentences of your own commenting on the phrase.

You wrote that you agree with “Fighting wars is not so much about killing people as it is about finding things out. The more you know, the more likely you are to win a battle.”

WHY DO YOU AGREE WITH IT?

You’re only in Grade 8 but honestly I’d give you like a 70%.

Can SOMEONE please explain to me, the new found hype with “The Illuminati want to control the world”?

Question by 1st Sgt Stavrouski: Can SOMEONE please explain to me, the new found hype with “The Illuminati want to control the world”?
OK, so I know that the Illuminati SUPPOSEDLY are powerful figures, like bankers and world leaders or politicians. They want to control the world supposedly, like the economy and stuff. Fair enough, a theory is a theory. I’m not here to say if I do or don’t believe it.
But WHY is everyone been on a hype wagon about it for the last year or so, about things like Satan, and Mind Control? Lady Gaga, and Jay-Z? And now I’m hearing things like the Illuminati want to KILL everybody, and they worship Satan – now to me, it seems like people are actually taking things too far. The Illuminati were an atheist group, who believed in Science, and not God, at a time when atheism was UNHEARD of. So, the Vatican were supposed to have hunted down these ‘heathens’ – there is a good amount of truth behind that story from what I know, but it is debatable.

For the sake of argument, lets say, SUPPOSEDLY, you take the argument from someone who is PRO-Illuminati, they might say that “The Christians are taking revenge, and want to make the Illuminati look bad”, and that this Anti-Illuminati stuff is all aimed at gaining Christian support, and blasting atheism (and that one day they will abolish ALL atheists, if you take it to extremes)

ALL I want to known is WHY people have started hyping about it, and WHERE it all came from. And also, I would like to know what the Illuminati are SUPPOSED to be today (ie the evil Corporation everyone thinks they are)

NOTE: I am NOT asking what the Illuminati are supposed to be, but I am asking what THESE NEW MODERN IDEAS about the Illuminati say (for example, Lady Gaga worshiping Satan and the Illuminati)

Best answer:

Answer by Louie O
The Illuminati group only existed for about 13 years, they disbanded in the late 1780′s and does not exist today. Non-Lady Gaga and any other musicians referencing the Illuminati today are just using the term to sell their product. They are taking advantage of young people’s obsession with conspiracy theories today.

I’m flabbergasted that in the 21st century so many young people are still falling for such nonsense. Human technology has been advancing for many generations but human intelligence does not seem to be keeping up.
