In Illinois, can a game warden issue a “hunting without a deer permit” for shooting during deer season?
I was sighting in my Muzzleloader on a friends property in Illinois and it was one of the days of the second deer season. A conservation police officer(game warden) didnt actually see me sighting in the gun but he did catch me walking back to my truck with the gun. He gave me a ticket for hunting white-tail deer without a permit. I wasnt even hunting. He basically made me a “poacher” when I’m innocent. Can they do that???? He seized my gun and now I will have to pay a huge fine to get my gun back.
What rifles are capable of shooting 500 yds plus out of the box with good optics?
Im not looking to debate who can and cant shoot this distance and that it isn’t necessary to have a gun to shoot that far. If its what i want its what i want. The question is clear. What rifles on the market now, Winchester, Browning,Ruger,Savage etc will perform well at long range distance without modifications like trigger jobs and so on. I know barrel length plays a part. The caliber of my thinking is a 300 win mag. What scopes would be good to pair up with the 300 win mag rifle also when shooting past 500 yards. The main purpose of the rifle is big game hunting like elk, moose, and bear.
I have a hard time believing i will take a shot past 500 yards but, I would like some input from experienced long range shooters to help me do my own researching. I do lots of research on guns before i buy them, and just like ruling things out and finding pros and cons.
I don’t want answers about what distance an invidual should orshouldn’tt shoot past when hunting. Ive read that crap over and over again idon’tt need to read anymore of it. Everyone has there own opinions.
Going shooting tomorrow, what should I do on the trip there?
I am a teacher. This boy I had two years ago was abused and neglected and now is being raised by his grandmother instead of his autistic father and his meth mother. His younger sister just graduated from my fifth grade elementary class, and I saw and spoke with the Grandmother at the picnic. She waitresses at a good Italian restaurant right by the school (she’s Italian) , and I see her all the time. She wants a man’s influence in her grandson’s life, and one of the things he wants is to shoot a gun. I am interested in taking him, because if he likes shooting, we can go all the time, and in three years when he is 16, we can go deer hunting together. My older brother became friends with a guy a few houses down that he mowed the lawn for. The guy was older, and became my brother’s best friend. They hunted and camped and rode motorcycles together. My brother was the best man at this guy’s wedding. My brother ended up becoming a cop on the same department as this guy. If I play my cards right, maybe this kid could become my friend and we could later on go hunting and camping and do things together. I don’t want to go to the local Los Angeles ranges, because they are crowded, loud, and the rangemasters are just a little too much. So we are going up to the high desert where no one can bother us. It’s a long trip. Almost two hours both ways. You can’t fit three people in my Honda Insight so we are taking the grandmother’s giant absurd behemoth gas guzzling monster of an SUV (I am paying half of the gas. Ouch Ouch goes my wallet.) Why a retired nurse who waitresses would be so foolish has to drive a giant SUV makes no sense, but that is another story. So I dropped off a 5 gallon container of water in case we get stuck (we will be shooting about ten miles off the road). I have left word with my friends where we are going, and when to call the authorities if we don’t report back. I have protein bars, granola bars and beef jerky and a lighter and a knife and a signal mirror, and several emergency blankets. She says she will take some food from the restaurant there. I have a dozen guns in their cases sitting by the front door along with ammunition, some interesting things to shoot and some garbage bags to take it all out.
The boy who is 13 has a DVD player and several games and his iPod.
I am wondering whether I should try and make conversion and talk to the Grandmother, or whether I should just be myself and nap and listen to my iPod.
I really don’t have much in common with women. I didn’t like or get along with my Mom, and I try to avoid women particularly older women as much as possible. But I don’t want her to fall asleep at the wheel, and the best way for that to happen is to talk with her. So right now I am debating whether I should just do my own thing on the way up, or try to be all friendly. For all I know she may like silence and quiet on the way up. I haven’t figured out what to do.

Anti-Gun people, if there is an all out ban on firarms, does that mean no hunting or shooting competitions?
Should the ban also apply to the cattle rancher in Montana or the homesteader in Alaska or the guy who hunts for his food because he doesn’t like the processed poison from the super market? Where do you draw the line?
Oh I am Chi Guy, I am.
what are some fun shooting games for the wii where you can use those cool accessories like the zapper and gun?

What type of rifle do you recommend for range shooting?
I recently purchased my first gun, a .45 Springfield XD Tactical and now I am looking to buy a rifle. I don’t plan to take it hunting. I was thinking about a Remington 700 in either .223 or .308 but I’m not sure. Any recommendations on either a caliber or model? I’m looking for the best combination of accuracy and affordability in both the caliber and rifle.
Is it possible to tell which direction someone is shooting from the sound?
They hunt a lot around here and its only supposed to be certain areas, fields, but I don’t trust that the bullets won’t go past where they are supposed to because the areas are not that big. I don’t trust that the hunters will think about what may be beyond what they are shooting, I know a good hunter will think of those things, but not all hunters do. Plus, even if its not hunting season, guys do target practice out here. There is no practice season.
And not all hunters are good hunters. Some of them do it for an excuse to get drunk and get away from their wives more than for the sport.
I’m not trying to debate ethical hunting practices, I just want to know if you can tell if people are shooting your direction when you cannot see them.
David—Greeaaat.
