Question by zxcv: How about Some jokes for friday?
A couple are driving along when they see a wounded skunk on the side of the road.
They stop, the wife gets out, picks it up, and brings it into the car.
She says, “Look, it’s shivering, it must be cold. What should I do?”
Her husband replies, “Put it between your legs to keep it warm.”
She asks,”What about the smell?”
He says,”Hold its nose.”

******************************
A man and a woman who have never met before find themselves in the same sleeping carriage of a train. After the initial embarrassment, they both manage to get to sleep, the woman on the top bunk, the man on the lower. In the middle of the night, the woman leans over and says, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly pass me another blanket.”
The man leans out and, with a glint in his eye, says, “I’ve got a better idea…..let’s pretend we’re married.”
“Why not?” giggles the woman.
“Good”, he replies. “Get your own f***ing blanket.”

*****************************
A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.
“What are you doing?” She asked.
“Hunting Flies” He responded.
“Oh!, killing any?” She asked.
“Yep, 3 males, 2 females”, he replied.
Intrigued, she asked. “How can you tell?”
“3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone”.

****************************
A blonde was driving down the motorway when her mobile phone rang.
It was her husband, urgently warning her: “Honey, I just heard on the news that there’s a car going the wrong way on the N1 Please be careful!”
“It’s not just one car!” said the blonde, “There’s f***ing hundreds of them!”

Question by Holly: Based on these books that I like, can you recommend me some similar ones?
Note that most of these, and most of what I’m looking for, is fantasy. So if that’s not your forte, back out of this question now and find another one.

One of my all-time favorites is Watership Down, a famous and critically acclaimed tale of rabbits who leave their home to find a new one, and encounter a threatening rival group once they get there. Full of war, strife, politics and talking bunnies.

I also love the Warrior Cats series by Erin Hunter, a super-long series about clans of cats living in the woods, and their tales of war, forbidden love, prophecies from dead ancestors, and loooots of talking cats.

Havemercy is another favorite! Havemercy is one of many half-machine and half-magic dragon ridden by a group of warriors in a war effort, and the book is about four different characters who eventually come together at the end due to Havemercy and her rider’s efforts. Includes gay relationships, so yay for the yaoi <3

Dark and thrilling stories in general are good, too. The Hunger Games, Life As We Knew It, The Rules of Survival, etc.

Dragons in general are also great :D Susan Fletcher's books, Anne McCafferey's, and anything with talking dragons is super cool!

Let's not forget "hunted" stories, where the main character spends the whole book fleeing from a powerful second party who either wants them captured, returned, or dead depending on the plot. Doesn't have to be fantasy.

Sooo, there's my requirements. Fire away!

I guess you could try sabriel by garth nix. Sabriel is a fantasy novel by Garth Nix, first published in 1995. It is the first in his Old Kingdom trilogy, and is followed by Lirael and Abhorsen.

Why do “some” believe that education and intelligence are synonymous?

Question by Nobody: Why do “some” believe that education and intelligence are synonymous?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and before everyone starts calling me an idiot for thinking, please actually read the question first.

Education really doesn’t have anything to do with intelligence at all (although I guess it depends on how you define or relate them. If you take the dictionary definition, for instance, it states

“capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc”

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/intelligence

Now I’ve seen many MANY posts on Y answers (not to mention many other places) where people seem to believe that education and intelligence are synonymous; using statements like, “My child is a genus because he/she gets straight As”, “I’m smart because I got an A in Calculus and Physics”, and the like.

I had even conducted a SMALL survey of asking a few people I know (which turned out to be 20) about how they would define intelligence. Half of the group, all computer science majors, had all (in their own words) stated that intelligence requires the ability to solve problems and to effectively use knowledge that you already know). The rest (which ended up being a collection of majors, and if I recall, they were all equally different), said (in their own words) that ignorance plays crucial role in defining intelligence.

Now what I notice with many people, including the 10 non-comp sci majors I had asked, is that they tend to say/assume that a person is intelligent if they have some type of skill/education in a field that they themselves do not have.

Example –
1)My room mate is stupid because he can’t write a recursive SQL query that transversed though every single table (and database) on a given instance of a SQL server.
2)I am stupid because he knows most of the elements atomic numbers on the periodic table of elements, but my roommate does.

Considering movies like “Good Will Hunting”, where a person that has absolutely no (or a “small”) amount of formal education and can be considered a true genius, intelligence by definition doesn’t really require education.

Anyway, before I need to drink another pot of coffee, “Why do “some” believe that education and intelligence are synonymous?”

Question by BlueManticore: Can you suggest some good chess-themed fiction?
I’m looking for some good books where chess plays a major part in the story. Some I’ve read already are:
“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll, Alice goes through the looking glass and becomes a pawn in a chess game,
“The Eight” by Katherine Neville, where the characters are sent on an Indiana Jones-style hunt for a lost jeweled chess set,
and
“The Flanders Panel” by Arturo Perez-Reverte, a murder mystery where the characters are researching a famous painting of a chess game.
Can you suggest any others?

Best answer:

Answer by *ash*
You’d probably like The Darkest Powers Series by Kelly Armstrong. The first book is called The Summoning, and the second is The Awakening. the 3rd is coming out soon.
anyways, it’s about a girl who can see ghosts..but everyone thinks shes crazy, so she is sent to a home for ‘troubled teens’ but while shes there she learns that the other teens are alot more like her self and not so ‘troubled’
it’s really good, and it’s suspenseful..there hasn’t really been any romance yet, but i do think there will be some in the next book.

and i also like the house of night and the blue bloods series that your reading :)

Question by Ginger R: I know a little about some of texas politics and i still ask, how did we ened up with bush?
i moved to texas from oregon when i was 19 to go to college. in one of my classes a professor talked of political persons who have ran for texas political offices. i can remember one, brought a repoter to his ranch for a “honey hunt.”! he would get women from mexico, drop them off on different parts of his ranch and that night him and a bunch of other men would “hunt” them down! he also said “rape is like bad weather, you have to take it as it comes.” i love texas, but man, sometimes i don’t get ‘em. how in the world do we have a president in office that stems from this?

Best answer:

Answer by trickygirlb
The guy you are speaking of is Clayton Williams he ran for Governor against Ann Richards and lost. If he would have won then George Bush would not have been governor when he beat Ann Richards in 98 and there for would not have run for president in 2000.

BTW, I loved the great Ann Richards and wish she wold have won again, but in 98 George W. Bush won the governorship on the platform of legalizing it for Texans to carry concealed handguns. This was the same time that Florida was having problems with the carjackings from people running into cars with their cars, so it was a hot topic issue at the time.

Why do some people think they are “better” than others?

Question by Dru: Why do some people think they are “better” than others?
I sold my boat :( …. It was camo and had a duck blind… I lost the motor cover this summer and had made one (pretty sad looking, but worked).. I don’t really care what others think about me too much.. I mean I don’t try to impress anyone, really have no reason to…. but the person that bought it said “I will have to buy a new motor cover because I am not pulling it down the road with that thing on it”…. Is what others think that important? There are so many people that seem to think what we have make us who we are…. There are a lot of hunting and fishing items I would love to have… but those items don’t make us better hunters or fisherman… do they? Isn’t it in our blood??????

Best answer:

He probably belittled your cover, hoping to get you to lower your price.

Gadget buyers all think the latest geegaws will somehow make up for the lack of practice they were too lazy to get to.

See it all the time in competition shooting. Guy shows up with the newest gun on the market, topped with the newest optic he could find, tucked into the newest hi-speed, low drag holster available. . ., and still shoots mediocre scores. And, he still can’t figure out why.
